International pop star Shakira finds herself in legal trouble once again as she faces charges of tax evasion in Spain. The renowned singer, known for hits like 'Hips Don't Lie,' has been charged by Spanish prosecutors for failing to pay 6.7 million euros ($7.1 million) in taxes on her 2018 income.

According to authorities, Shakira allegedly used an offshore company to avoid paying the taxes. The Colombian singer, who currently resides in Miami, has been notified of the latest charges but has not yet responded.

This is not the first time Shakira has been accused of tax evasion. Spanish prosecutors claim that she lived in Barcelona for more than half of the time between 2012 and 2014 and amassed a tax bill of $15.4 million.

However, Shakira insists that her official residence was in the Bahamas during that period, meaning she does not owe the Spanish government any taxes. Her representatives have stated that she has always complied with the law and followed the advice of respected tax firm PriceWaterhouse Coopers.

Despite her cooperation and adherence to legal requirements, Shakira believes her rights continue to be violated by the Spanish Tax Office, as they press forward with what she considers to be baseless accusations. She remains confident that her innocence will be proven by the end of the judicial process.

The trial to address the previous tax evasion charges is scheduled for November. Prosecutors have requested a sentence of eight years and two months for Shakira, along with a hefty fine of approximately $25 million.

Shakira, whose full name is Shakira Isabel Mebarak Ripoll, has had a longstanding connection to Spain due to her relationship with retired soccer player Gerard Piqué. The couple, who recently ended their 11-year partnership, lived together in Barcelona until last year.

Over the past decade, Spanish tax authorities have been cracking down on high-profile individuals, including soccer stars Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, for not paying their taxes in full. While both Messi and Ronaldo were found guilty of tax evasion, neither faced prison time due to a provision that allows for sentences under two years to be waived for first-time offenders.
