Kansas youth pastor Matthew Lee Richards, who allegedly tried to stab his wife and five children to death before attempting to set his home on fire, appeared in court last week, according to sources.

Richards is facing five counts of attempted premeditated first-degree murder and one count of aggravated arson with risk of bodily harm in connection with the Sept. 16 incident.

In a shocking twist, an unsealed affidavit reveals Richards' deep financial desperation as the motive behind the horrifying attack.

According to the affidavit, Richards claimed that his family was going to be evicted on the same day he planned to murder them.

Investigators discovered that Richards had been withholding information about their dire financial standing from his wife, which led him to believe that their eviction was imminent.

Disturbingly, Richards allegedly stated to the police that he believed it would be better if his family died rather than discovering the truth about their financial situation.

The children, ranging from ages 19 to young juveniles, as well as his wife, suffered varying degrees of laceration injuries during the attack.

While one of the children managed to alert emergency services after witnessing their father stab their mother, Richards chased down the child with a knife in hand.

Responding to a call for a disturbance and fire, authorities arrived on the scene to find Richards' home ablaze in the early hours of September 16th.

Firefighters quickly extinguished the fire in the basement, while all five victims, along with Richards, were rushed to the hospital for treatment.

The heinous act, committed by a man known in the community as a youth pastor, has left congregants and community members shocked and saddened.

Richards, who had been actively involved in Crossroads Christian Church, was described as a devoted family man with a passion for teaching children about Jesus.

Although he is being held on a $5 million bond, Richards did not enter a plea at his recent court appearance.

As the investigation continues, the community is left grappling with the unthinkable, while the victims and their loved ones face a long road to recovery.

The shocking and horrifying incident serves as a grim reminder of the hidden desperation that can lurk behind closed doors.

In its aftermath, it is hoped that this tragedy will inspire greater awareness and support systems for those facing financial hardship and mental distress.
