A women’s prison in Mexico, plagued by food poisoning and inadequate medical care, has been hit by a series of tragic suicides in the past 4 1/2 months.

The federal prisons bureau has confirmed these suicides and has vowed to address the dire situation at this prison located in the state of Morelos, just south of Mexico City.

Efforts to improve conditions include a change in prison management and the introduction of increased sports, cultural, and handicraft activities for the approximately 1,000 incarcerated women.

Reports from earlier this year have highlighted the grim reality within the prison, where inmates have been served rotting food, subjecting them to constant health risks.

In 2022 alone, 400 inmates suffered from food poisoning incidents, as revealed by the governmental National Human Rights Commission.

Further investigations revealed that when the women fell ill, they were denied proper medical care, with medications often unavailable.

This lack of medical care has been deemed a systematic violation of the imprisoned women's right to health care, leading to serious human rights abuses.

The situation at the prison takes on an even more alarming tone as it welcomes inmates transferred from other states in recent years.

As authorities strive to rectify the dire circumstances, the narrative surrounding this women's prison remains an unsettling saga of neglect, despair, and tragedy.
