A feisty alligator, measuring 4 feet in length, has been causing quite a stir in a small New Jersey town.

Eluding authorities for over a week, the clever reptile forced a park to shut down, leaving residents both fascinated and a little on edge.

However, the crafty gator's days of freedom came to an end on Thursday night, when local police finally captured it.

In a Facebook post, the Piscataway Township Police Department triumphantly announced, 'Gator behind bars! Piscataway Cops Catch Cold-Blooded Reptile!'

Accompanying the post was body camera footage, offering a glimpse into the thrilling moments leading up to the capture.

This alligator had managed to give authorities the slip twice before, despite being spotted around Lake Creighton, also known as the Duck Pond, and the Ambrose Brook since late last month.

Its presence in New Jersey has puzzled officials, as alligators are not native to the area, leaving them speculating about its origins.

Reports of a bystander witnessing an alligator attacking a duck, which then disappeared, further fueled the mystery.

Search efforts to locate either the alligator or the unfortunate waterfowl were unsuccessful.

The daring capture took place when a resident reported spotting the alligator strolling down a street in the Possumtown neighborhood around 10 p.m. Thursday.

Officer Ian Paglia of the Piscataway Patrol was able to subdue and restrain the reptile, skillfully detaining it until backup arrived.

The incredible body camera footage shows officers tirelessly chasing the agile gator through the streets, eventually corning it in a grassy area.

With police lights flashing, one brave officer managed to pin down the alligator with his foot and quickly secure an improvised leash around its neck.

The residents looked on, simultaneously relieved and astonished at the sight before them.

Now in the custody of the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection's Fish & Wildlife Division, the captured alligator will be relocated to a local zoo or sanctuary.

Its journey may have come to an end, but the mystery of how it found itself in the heart of New Jersey is still unsolved.

As stories of encounters with alligators continue to baffle us, this enigmatic creature has undoubtedly left its mark on the community, capturing our attention and propelling us into a world of astonishing wildlife encounters.

Let this peculiar tale serve as a reminder that sometimes reality proves to be stranger than fiction.
